How to Increase Internet Connection Speed on Windows 11/10 (Best Setting)


Check Internet Speed

Before making any changes find out what your download and upload speeds should be with your internet plan and run a test of your current internet speed the most popular is the speed test by Ookla. You could use their app from the Microsoft store or go to their website speedtest.net to run it.

The ping lets you know how fast the response is after sending out a request,  measured in milliseconds the lower the number the better especially when playing multiplayer games like Fortnite.

Limit Bandwidth for Updates

Windows updates running in the background can be a cause for periodic slowdowns of your Internet. To limit how much bandwidth, Microsoft can use for those updates and disable updates being sent to other pcs on your local network or on the internet 

1. Go to settings

2. In the left pane go to windows update then on the right go to advanced options

3. Under additional options click delivery optimization 

4 To stop Microsoft from using your computer as their server to deliver updates to other pcs if turned on click the toggle here at the top to turn off allow downloads from other pcs.

5. Now to limit the download and upload bandwidth for windows updates on your computer Go to advanced options 

6. In download settings you can choose either absolute bandwidth or percentage of measured bandwidth

7. I prefer absolute bandwidth if you choose this option to tick the two boxes below

8. You can change both the numbers to whatever you want in megabits per second for downloading updates in the background and foreground.

9. The defaults of one and five seem reasonable so I'll leave these alone or if you go with the percentage of measured bandwidth tick both the boxes.

10. Then move the sliders to the values that work best for you.


Restart your Windows 11 PC

This next one will be the easiest and most obvious solution for some of you. Many times there'll be some kind of bug or background process causing internet issues sometimes a simple restart will fix the problem.


Disable Metered Connection

If you have data limits with your internet service provider having a meter connection enabled can help to reduce data usage but could also give you slower internet speeds. If you don't need meter connection enabled or just want to disable it temporarily

1. Let's open the settings app

2. In the left pane go to network & internet

3. If you're connected via wi-fi select wi-fi 

4. Click properties for your wi-fi network

5. Then for metered connection click the switch to turn it off



6. Go back to the network & internet, if you're using a wired ethernet connection.

7. Select ethernet 

8. Then go to metered connection and click the switch to disable it


Change DNS Server

Oftentimes using the DNS servers assigned by your ISP to translate domain names into IP addresses is not the best. Modifying your DNS has had positive results for many people. To change it 

Go to the taskbar and search control panel

2. Make sure that in view by category selected then click on network and internet

3. Select network and sharing center

4. To the right of connections depending on what you're using click the link for ethernet or wi-fi

5. The status window that pops up click on properties


6. In the list look for internet protocol version 4



7. Double-click on it click to select use the following DNS server addresses


8. Our favorite is from Cloudflare 

9. For preferred DNS server you have to click into each of these fields

10. Type one 1111

11. For alternate DNS server type 1001


You can also try this

1. In the field for preferred DNS type 8888

2. And for alternate DNS server type 8844 

Experiment with those two the distance of the service from your location will have an impact on overall speeds when you're done click ok.


Turn off Background Apps

Programs you're not using that run in the background consuming your valuable bandwidth can have a negative impact on your overall internet speed. To disable background programs - 

1. Open the settings app 

2. On the left select apps 

3. Then select apps and features 

4. Go through the list there might be many that you want to turn off when you find an app that you know you don't want to run in the background 

5. Select the three-dot menu on the right and click on advanced options


6. In background apps permissions click the drop-down menu and select never

7. Do this for all programs that you know you don't need running in the background.


Scan For Virus/Malware

An issue that has plagued internet connection speeds since computers became popular is viruses and other malware. If it's been a while it just might be time to run a full system scan using your favorite antivirus software. To run a full system scan with the built-in windows defender 

1. Go to search and type virus 

2. Click on virus and threat protection 

3. Doing a quick scan is fine for daily use but for a more comprehensive scan click on scan options


4. Select full scan then at the bottom of this window click scan now


5. Depending on your hardware this could take hours to complete.
