Motorola is an American multinational telecommunications company with close to 100,000 employees worldwide the company was founded nearly 90 years ago on September 25th, 1928 by Paul and Joseph Galvin over the years they have offered several tech products and more recently have been associated with their popular cell phone models they merged with Google back in 2012 overtime the company has sold pieces of itself to different telecommunications and software companies including Lenovo and Nokia over its long history the company has experienced many ups and downs but the brand continues to hold on strong.


1. Motorola is the fastest-growing OEM in North America

OEM stands for original equipment manufacturer and Motorola's numbers in 2017 and 18 and Motorola's numbers in 2017 and 18 show that it's the fastest-growing ôm in North America their distribution numbers have increased 50% in the 2017 to 18 fiscal year and their activations have increased 100 percent over that three-year period this doesn't mean they're the best selling or most popular brand in North America but it is good news for Motorola's future as they work to remain relevant in competitive markets 


2. They invented the car radio walkie talkie and pager

Motorola has been innovators in mobile communication from the beginning in 1930 they invented the first car radio which was meant to be used exclusively in police cars they also invented the first walkie talkies in 1940 which proved to be very helpful to the military in World War two in 1956 they invented the first pagers these were used primarily in hospital environments Motorola continues to be a company that is driven by innovation.


3. The company's name was partly inspired by Crayola

 

Paul and Joseph Galvin realized many popular products ended up in the word Ola they saw the popularity of the Victrola Crayola and movie Ola companies Paul wanted to incorporate the word motor since it was developing radios for motor vehicles so all he did was combine motor with the popular Ola ending to come up with the current name of Motorola as the company became so popular and gained notoriety they officially changed their name to Motorola Inc


4. Without Motorola, we wouldn't have car radios cell phones or portable televisions

 

Since they first came onto the scene in 1928 Motorola has been changing the way the world looks at technology they started out with car radios and eventually moved on to color televisions they then turned to cell phones and created the first model of the flip phone as far back as current generations can remember Motorola has been a dominant player in the cell phone and electronics industry.


5. Vintage models of the Motorola Zack Morris phone have sold for as much as $500

Motorola's brick version of their first cell phone the DynaTAC 8000x is the very phone you on the show Saved by the Bell the 1980s and 90s heartthrob Zack Morris owned the phone on the show and was one of the first television characters to have one you can still buy this model online for about $500 believe it or not it is fully functional all you have to do is pop your sim card in there and use it like a regular cell phone.


6. From 2007 to 2009 the company lost $4.3 billion

 

Motorola was hit hard by the worldwide financial crisis that began back in 2007 following these major losses the company was restructured into two independent public companies back in 2011 were Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility Motorola Solutions is considered to be the official successor of Motorola while Motorola Mobility is seen as a more spin-off company.


7. Motorola's technology was used by Neil Armstrong

 

On the moon, most people know the iconic words that Neil Armstrong said after he took the first steps on the moon one small step for man one giant leap for mankind the company that helped him to transmit these historic words was actually Motorola they, in fact, supplied the radio transponder that was used to deliver that message back to earth.


8. Google acquired Motorola Mobility in 2012 for $12.5 billion

Motorola sold off its mobility sector to Google back in 2012 for $12.5 billion in a cash sale as part of the sale Google took control over 7,000 patents which seems to be their primary goal in purchasing in 2014 Google turned around and sold most of the division to Lenovo a Chinese tech company for 2.91 billion dollars and Google managed to retain 2,000 of the patents they had originally purchased in the transaction.


9. They created the first cell phone with mobile web browsing

 

After introducing the first cell phone Motorola worked tirelessly to improve their technology and offer greater functionality for their users they were the first to conceive the idea of putting mobile web browsing into cell phones their Motorola Eden I 1000 plus was the first phone to give users the option of searching the web they were also able to send messages to listen to the radio send faxes and of course make phone calls this kind of innovation opened the door for other technology companies to explore how to utilize cell phones in different ways.


10. Motorola CEO Greg Brown lives in an $8 billion mansion

Greg Brown has been a CEO of Motorola Solutions since 2008 he's been the longest-running CEO besides the company's founder Paul Galvin Greg Brown lives in an $8 million mansion in Barrington Illinois eight million dollars may not sound like much compared to the cost of many mansions but this home is definitely impressive it has eight bedrooms and nine and a half bathrooms with over 20,000 square feet of space it also has a pool a six-car garage and a pool house it was built in 2010 and is one of the largest homes in Illinois.
