1. Microsoft saved Apple

In 1997, Microsoft saved Apple from almost-certain bankruptcy by making a $150 million investment. Steve Jobs announced it on stage at his first appearance as Apple CEO. Though it got boos from the audience, that infamous investment gave Apple enough money and breathing room to consolidate control of its Mac business and shift that momentum into iPod and iTunes.Apple which was worth less than $3 billion at that time is now worth over $700 billion. Part of this can be attributed to Microsoft’s investment.


2. BillGates became the youngest-ever billionaire at that time


In 1987, at age 31, Microsoft cofounder BillGates became the youngest-ever billionaire at the time. In 1995, he'd become the world's richest man with a net worth of $12.9 billion. Beyond Bill Gates, analysts estimate that Microsoft's explosive growth has made for at least two more making a total of 3 billionaires and as many as 12,000 millionaires. From former CEO Steve Ballmer, who bought the LA Clippers for $2 billion in 2014 to co-Founder Paul Allen, a lot of people owe their fortune to Microsoft.

3. Microsoft with Timex
 


In 1994, Timex and Microsoft designed the data link 150 watch together. It was the first-ever smartwatch, predating the rest of the market by well over a decade. Though it wasn’t that great and was way ahead of its time, the smartwatch did get certified by NASA for space travel. And one more interesting thing about this smartwatch is its battery life which lasted for 3 years beating every other smartwatch by an infinite margin.

4. Microsoft royalties


When creating its Android and Chrome operating systems, Google unlawfully used technology from Oracle, Microsoft, and others, leaving its vendor partners exposed. As a means of settlement, for every Android device, Microsoft is estimated to collect around $8 in royalties. In 2013, those royalty fees were worth around$3.5 billion.

 5. Internet Explorer


In an attempt to make Internet Explorer a popular browsing choice, Microsoft intentionally made msn.com look wrong on Opera browsers back in 2003. Despite that controversial move from Microsoft, we all know how that turns out to be.

6. Windows 95
 


In late 1995 despite a million-dollar advertisement, Windows 95 was the second most installed piece of software. The video game Doom is the first one. Doom’s popularity led Microsoft to promote the operating system as a gaming platform, part of which makes Windows the first choice for gaming on computers.

7. Microsoft excel


Microsoft's first killer app was MicrosoftExcel, which unseated the reigning spreadsheet champions Apple VisiCalc and Lotus 1-2-3. The shortcomings of Visi Calc were well addressed and the popularity of Lotus 1-2-3 on MS-DOS was dethroned with the release of Microsoft Excel. And we all love to use the office suite.
